My story

Gertie is a smart, young girl who had a rough start in life. She was less than a year old when she became a mama and then had this litter of pups probably taken away all at once. As a result she developed mastitis, became depressed, was listed as having kennel stress, and was put on the shelter’s list to be euthanized in December. With the help of a rescue and her current foster, she was saved. She was spayed the day she left & it took a few days for her to start trusting and feeling well. She enjoyed spending time laying in the swing in her foster’s backyard in the sunshine. After a few days she was introduced to the foster’s other dogs. She liked the larger, male dogs however smaller, female did not like her. Somehow, she developed kennel cough and had to be separated from all of them for a couple of weeks. During this time she practiced walking on a leash and learning simple commands. She loves treats and toys. She loves running around and rolling in the grass. She is a bit spoiled and sleeps on blankets in the living room with the tv on. She is finally well again and was reintroduced to the boy dogs slowly because she seemed to miss them. She hasn’t met any cats or children yet and might be better in a home without small children because of her strength. She does need time to warm up to people and other dogs however, once she knows you she is very loving. She is still young and energetic, and needs continued training. A dedicated, experienced adult, or family with older children would be best.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Gertie, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
